This article is for customers on our Free and Growth plans.
Before you begin
- You must be a Shopify administrator on your account to make these changes.
- For non-Plus Shopify customers or those using the Checkout extensibility upgrade, you can install the Contentsquare tag on your storefront - but note that Shopify’s built-in checkout process doesn't support the direct integration of third-party scripts, including the Contentsquare tag.
-
If you use Shopify Plus with a Contentsquare Pro or Enterprise plan, you can track limited checkout flow data. This doesn't include Session Replay or Heatmaps. See our custom web pixel guide for help setting this up and the Shopify article on using pixels for an overview. This option isn't available for Contentsquare Free or Growth plans.
Installing the Contentsquare tag on your Shopify site
The following section installs the Contentsquare tag across pages on your Shopify site, except your checkout flow. If you're a Shopify Plus customer with a Contentsquare Pro or Enterprise plan, take a look at our guide on how to track the checkout flow using a custom web pixel.
1. Copy your Contentsquare tag from inside Contentsquare.
2. From your Shopify Admin dashboard, click Online Store, then click Themes.
3. On your current theme, click the more options button (⋯), then click Edit code.
4. Within the layout folder, click theme.liquid.
5. Inside your theme.liquid file, paste the Contentsquare tag code just before the closing </head> tag.
Some themes will use a variation of the <head> tags, including {/head}, [/header], or [/head]. These all work in the same way.
6. Click Save to apply the changes.
You should see an Asset saved confirmation message.
Allow time for the installation to take effect, then verify the installation in Contentsquare.
