When creating a survey, you can select the type of Survey you'd like users to interact with. This article provides detail on the appearance and functionality of each type of Survey.
Popover Survey
A Popover Survey shows questions inside a widget at the bottom of a page. With Popover Surveys you can ask questions at key moments in a user's journey.
Appearance
- The widget can be positioned on the bottom-left or bottom-right of a page.
- In a minimized state, the first question is shown inside the minimized widget.
Behavior
- When the widget is first presented to users, it is shown in a minimized state on mobile devices and an expanded state on tablet and desktop devices.
- Clicking or tapping on the widget will maximize or minimize the survey widget, depending on its current state.
- A survey that a user minimizes will set a cookie on that user's browser to keep the survey minimized, unless the user interacts with the survey again. The minimized state is maintained even if a user navigates to another page containing the same survey.
Button Survey
Button Surveys appear as a button that users can click to expand the survey. This survey encourages feedback with an eye-catching button.
Appearance
- The default button text default (i.e. "Feedback") can be customized.
- The button can be positioned on the middle-right, middle-left, bottom-right, or bottom-left of the page.
Behavior
- When presented to users, Button Surveys always load as a button in a minimized state across mobile, tablet, and desktop devices. Users must click on the button to expand and respond to the survey. This behavior is different to Popover Surveys that are first presented as expanded on desktop and minimized on tablet and mobile devices.
- You can store User Attributes with on-site survey responses. You can also make a survey disappear for a specific user after a response is received. Through Survey logic, you have control over which questions a user is shown based on their response.
Bubble Survey
Bubble Surveys appear as a bubble icon that users can click to expand the survey. Similar to the Button Survey, it encourages feedback with a visual icon.
Appearance
- The button can be positioned on the bottom-right or bottom-left of the page.
Behavior
- When presented to users, Bubble Surveys always load as a bubble in a minimized state across mobile, tablet, and desktop devices. Users must click on the bubble to expand and respond to the survey.
Embedded Survey
Embedded Surveys appear as a component fixed to a specific location, inline with the content on your page. This survey gives more contextual responses based on the content users were shown immediately before the survey.
Appearance
- You can select at which location on the page you'd like to embed this survey.
- An embedded survey won't cover other content already on that page.
- Changes you make to an embedded survey can take 60 seconds to update on your live site.
Behavior
- An embedded survey includes the same functionality as other Survey types.
- The survey will appear inline with page content on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
- This survey is positioned on the page based on a target element selector you provide on the survey creation page. If the selector matches multiple page elements, the survey will be embedded at the first matching element.
Full Screen Survey
Full Screen Surveys appear as a modal window that overlays the middle of a page. This appearance lets you fully immerse users in a survey without having them leave your site.
Appearance
- When a full screen survey opens, it triggers a dark, semi-transparent overlay on the background that dims the rest of the page to bring the survey window into clear focus for the user.
Behavior
- Full Screen Surveys have the same functionality as other Survey types.
- Full screen Surveys can be shown on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
- A full screen survey can be shown in one of the following ways: immediately after page load, after a delay, when a user's cursor leaves the top of the page, or when a user scrolls halfway down the page.
Link Survey
Creating a Link Survey will generate a unique URL, or link, that you can share with users. With this link, you can send a survey across multiple channels and collect responses from a range of sources.
Appearance
- Link Surveys are shown on a dedicated page using a different domain to your site (https://surveys.hotjar.com/{your-survey-id}.
- There is no option to collapse a link survey, as it is shown on a dedicated page.
- Link Surveys can be accessed on desktop, tablet, and mobile devices.
Behavior
- Responses to a link survey cannot be connected to recordings, as the domain used to show the survey is different to your site's domain. This means the survey domain doesn't have the tracking code installed to enable recordings to be captured. It's not possible to install your tracking code on the link survey domain.
- An on-site invitation can also be shown on your site, allowing your site users to take a survey without having received a direct link through another channel. The appearance and text of the on-site invitation can be customized on your survey creation page.
