What to expect

This integration will help you to assess how performances affect your customer's experience. You will be able to access Contentsquare session replays directly in your APM Dashboard in order to see exactly what a user was doing when an error occurred and combine the technical data of your APM with the behavioral data surfaced from Contentsquare to uncover and prioritize the issues that have the greatest impact on your customer experience and revenue. When identifying an issue in a Contentsquare session replay, you will also be able to find the link to the corresponding Dynatrace session so that you can investigate it further in your APM.

Step 1

Please go to the section How to request an integration to see the instructions to enable this integration. You can then return here once completed.

In order to use the full integration, please provide your Contentsquare CSM or support team with your Dynatrace login domain, it is usually something like this: domain.live.dynatrace.com . You can find this in the URL of the Dynatrace web app. This will allow you go from the Contentsquare session replay to the relevant Dynatrace session. See usage instructions below.

If you have already completed the step above then continue below.

Step 2

In the Dynatrace portal, navigate to the Application section on the left menu then click Frontend.

Select the application where you want to set up the Contentsquare integration.

Once in the application, select the three dots (…) in the top right and press Edit.

Under the application settings, expand the “Capturing” menu and select the “Session and Action Properties”.

Once in the Session and Action Properties screen, select “Add property”.

Switch the property selection to “Custom Defined Property”.

Now depending on whether your current Dynatrace instance deployed to your live site supports the Dynatrace Javascript DtrumApi then you should choose one of the 2 options below:

Instances supporting DtrumApi

Under Expression Type, select JavaScript API.
Select data type (string) and string length set to 200.

Input the Display Name from the property that will be visible in the portal.

Make sure to name it: Contentsquare Replay and make sure the key is contentsquarereplay and nothing else.

Select “Store as Session Property” and “Last Value”. 

Save the property.

Repeat the steps above to create another property and set the JavaScript API this time to be Contentsquare SID with length 100 and it is important to make sure that you use the exact name above so that it generates a key like this: contentsquaresid

Instances NOT supporting DtrumApi

Under Expression Type, select JavaScript variable.

Select data type (string) and string length set to 200.

Insert CS_CONF.integrations_handler.replaylink as the variable

Input the Display Name from the property that will be visible in the portal.

Make sure to name it: Contentsquare Replay and make sure the key is contentsquarereplay and nothing else.

Selecting “Ignore Do Not Track” will allow us to capture this value from users who have Do Not Track enabled in their browser.

If left un-toggled, we will not capture the value for browsers with Do Not Track enabled.

Select “Store as Session Property” and “Last Value”. 

Save the property.

Repeat the steps above to create another property and set the Javascript variable this time to be CS_CONF.integrations_handler.sessionID with length 100 and name it Contentsquare SID.

It is important to make sure that you use the exact name above so that it generates a key like this:

contentsquaresid

After both are defined you should see something like this:

If for some reason the contentsquaresid part is different then please inform the Contentsquare team to configure the different key inside your integration settings on our side, otherwise the link to Dynatrace from Contentsquare will not work.

If the RUM tag is set to automatically update, the property capture will begin within minutes. If the tag is set to manual update mode, an update will be required to set the property.

Verifying it works

You can use the chrome extension to check the results are sent to CS

Note that it will only send this once per session on the very first pageview, so to test this you will need to delete cookies then reload.

Check inside the Dynatrace platform for the replay link:

It will only have a replay link for those users who's sessions were collected by session replay:

In any session you should see a CS replay link.

Link from Contentsquare to Dynatrace

Assuming you have already provided Contentsquare with the Dynatrace login domain (and also if you have a custom key for the Contentsquare SID session property in Dynatrace as mentioned in instructions above and provided that also), you can then check if the link from Contentsquare session replays works to Dynatrace by going to any replay session that was captured after the integration was enabled and do the following in the very first pageview of the session.

Click the 3 dots then Show variables

 

You will then see this popup. Click the DVAR tab and find the APM_DT_Session Link key which contains a link to Dynatrace. You can click Copy value and paste into your browser to open it. In the future this URL will be clickable.

 

This should then take you straight to the same session in Dynatrace:

 

Please note that Dynatrace only allows Session data to be shown and searched after a live session has ended for a visitor. This is usually 30 minutes after the start of idle time or after leaving the site. So if you open one of these links from sessions that are still active they will not work. You can open them later though. Any sessions that are older will open the moment you go to the link.
