Create a dashboard to understand the impact web performance has on conversion, when experienced by users on an entry page.
For this dashboard we are going to focus only on pages that could lead to a conversion.
1. Create a mapping
Create a mapping with one page group that defines the pages you want to observe as 'Entry Pages' E.g. Catalog and content pages.
Note: Exclude all pages that users could land on, but do not tend to convert from.
For example, an 'Order History' page (users may enter your website via the 'Order history page' after receiving their order confirmation email). It might be beneficial to exclude this page from your mapping, as these users are less likely to convert. Additionally, their web performance is expected to be better to others, given their recent visit to the website.
2. Define Segments
1. Go to 'Analysis setup', followed by 'Segments'.
2. Click 'New Segment'.
3. Enter the name for the first segment (e.g. "LCP 'Good' on Landing Page").
4. Use the ‘Same Pageview’ condition to filter sessions with a LCP condition on the 'Landing Page'.
5. Choose the LCP metric from the drop down list.
6. We recommend using the condition 'between' when setting the LCP value (e.g. LCP between 0.5 and 2.5 seconds).
7. Add another condition selecting 'And', 'Segment' does not match 'Bots and spiders'.
8. Click 'Create' to save the segment.
9. Duplicate the first segment to set up the additional segments
- LCP ‘Needs improvement’ on Landing Page
- Set the condition to users who experienced a LCP between 2.5 and 4 seconds
- LCP ‘Poor’ on Landing Page
- Set the condition to users who experienced a LCP between 4 and 15 seconds
We suggest three segments to follow Google’s recommendation but you can be as granular as you like and add a 4th segment if it makes sense for you. If you don’t know, don’t worry, you will be able to add one later.
3. Create the dashboard
1. Go to 'Dashboards' and click 'Open dashboard list', followed by 'New dashboard'.
2. Select 'Segment performance' from the templates and name the dashboard.
3. Use the segments you have created (Good, Needs Improvement and Poor).
4. Select different metrics against the segments e.g.; Bounce Rate, Session Time and Conversion (Add to Cart as the Goal), followed by the 'Add' button.
5. Click 'Create my dashboard' and you can now view the data.
