Session Replay captures a targeted percentage of your visitors' sessions. This is called sampling, and you three methods available to control which sessions are collected, and how to combine them for maximum value.
How many sessions are collected by default
Your plan determines how many sessions Contentsquare captures:
- Pro plans: 25% of sessions (can be increased)
- Enterprise plans: 50% of sessions (can be increased)
Both rates can be increased. Contact your Customer Success Manager to adjust your global rate.
Collection methods
There are different methods you can use to control which sessions are collected.
Global sampling rate
Contentsquare randomly collects sessions across your entire site based on your plan's percentage. This rate is set during your implementation and defined in your contract.
URL sampling
URL Sampling lets you set a specific collection rate (1–100%) for chosen URLs — regardless of your global rate. Use it to capture more sessions on high-priority pages or fewer sessions on low-priority ones. You can set up to 20 URL rules.
To configure URL Sampling, contact your Customer Success Manager.
Pageviews from URL sampling count towards the contractualized annual page view quota.
Event-Triggered Replay (ETR)
Event-Triggered Replay starts capturing a session when a specific user action occurs, rather than randomly. You can capture at two levels:
- Page level — captures 100% of the page where the event is triggered
- Session level — captures the user's entire session when the event is triggered at any point
Contact your Customer Success Manager to enable Event-Triggered Replay.
Pageviews from ETR count towards the annual pageview quota in-contract.
Combining collection methods
You can use Global sampling, URL Sampling, and ETR together in the same project:
- URL Sampling applies a targeted rate to matched pages, on top of your global rate
- ETR ensures specific sessions are always captured, regardless of your global rate
This means you can run a lower global rate for general traffic while guaranteeing full collection on your most critical pages or user actions.
Minimum rates for specific features
Some Contentsquare features require a minimum collection rate to work correctly. If your current rate is below the minimums below, contact your Customer Success Manager.
| Feature | Minimum collection rate |
| Insights | 10% |
| Experience Monitoring | 50% |
| Application Performance Monitoring (APM) Integrations | 100% |
| Voice of Customer integrations | 100% or Event-Triggered Replay |
