Google Analytics 4 Events is an advanced event-based measurement system that tracks user interactions across websites and apps with AI-powered insights. It automatically collects key user actions while allowing custom event creation, providing real-time reporting and cross-platform tracking to help businesses understand customer journeys and optimize marketing performance.
The Google Analytics 4 Events (also known as ‘GA4 Events’) integration enables you to drill through your Google Analytics data to see your users’ experience.
In this article, you’ll find a guide on setting up the two features available with this Google Analytics integration.
Note
This integration does not support implementations of Google Analytics through the Google Tag Manager (GTM) and other tag managers. If Google Analytics is being added through the Google Tag Manager, the integration will not work. Google Analytics must be added directly to your website code, not through a tag manager, to benefit from this integration.
Before you begin
Before getting started, be aware of the following:
- An existing Google Analytics setup is required. See Google's Get started with Analytics article for help with this.
- If Google Analytics is being added through Google Tag Manager, the integration will not work. Google Analytics must be added directly to your website code, not through a tag manager, to benefit from this integration.
- Google Analytics Goals are not supported – they featured in Universal Analytics, which was retired on July 1st, 2023.
- This integration only works when events are created in Google Analytics. If events are created in Google Tag Manager or elsewhere and passed to Google Analytics, these events will not be detected.
How to connect
Creating Events from Google Analytics Events
- Click ‘Install integration’ in the integration page: Google Analytics Events will start to be captured and attached to session data used in replays and Heatmaps. You may need to allow some time to pass before captured Google Analytics Events appear in the Events filter.
- Use GA events to filter session data and target Surveys.
How to use Google Analytics events in segmentation
You can use the Google Analytics events as a segment condition across Contentsquare’s capabilities, like Session Replay or Journey Analysis.
- Open the Analysis Context and go to the Segments tab,
- Click the Segment dropdown and select ‘Google Analytics 4 Events’.
- Click the Select an attribute dropdown and select your Google Analytics 4 Events.
Targeting Surveys using Google Analytics Events
- From the targeting settings of your Survey setup, select ‘Specific Pages’.
- Choose ‘Events’ from the dropdown menu.
- Enter ‘GA_’ followed by the Google Analytics Event name as the value for the Event targeting field.
- Click ‘Done’ and activate the Survey.
