This MCP server lets you connect third-party AI agents and tools to your Contentsquare data. Before enabling any such tool, you're responsible for reviewing it and confirming that it meets your organization's own security, privacy, and data-handling policies.
Use this article to connect an AI agent to the Contentsquare MCP integration. Most AI agents connect through OAuth. Some tools, such as Gemini Enterprise, require you to create an Application and enter its Client ID and Client secret.
Set up an AI agent
Before you begin
Setup permissions
Only Customer Admins can set up the MCP integration and manage who else can use it. Once set up, a an admin can also grant other users, teams, or the whole account access to query Contentsquare data through the MCP server.
Ensure you have the following before setting up the integration:
- Project access: Permissions to access the Contentsquare projects you want to query via the AI agent
- Compatible AI agent: An MCP-compatible AI tool such as Claude Desktop, ChatGPT (with MCP support), Microsoft Copilot, or other MCP-compatible AI agents.
- Tool call volume awareness: Review the tool call limits above to understand your monthly allowance. Pro and Enterprise customers can purchase additional capacity if needed.
Set up the AI agent
- Click on Analysis setup in the main menu.
-
Click Model Context Protocol (MCP).
- Select your AI agent and follow the set up steps directly on the interface.
Most AI agents, such as Claude and ChatGPT, register with Contentsquare automatically the first time you connect them. Some tools, such as Gemini Enterprise, require a Client ID and a Client secret instead.
Access tokens expire after one hour and are automatically refreshed by the AI agent. You can only access projects where you already have Contentsquare permissions. Data transfer is secured using OAuth authentication.
How to connect a tool that needs a Client ID and Client secret
Some AI tools don't sign in to Contentsquare on their own. They ask you for a Client ID and a Client secret when you set them up. Gemini Enterprise works this way.
To connect one of these tools, create an Application in Contentsquare. An application belongs to your Contentsquare account, not an individual. Each one gives you a Client ID and a Client secret to paste into the external tool. Contentsquare sets the redirect URI and permissions for the tool you pick, so you don't enter anything technical by hand.
Before you begin
Check that you:
- You're a Customer Admin on the Contentsquare account.
- You can configure the external tool. For Gemini Enterprise this means a Google Workspace or team administrator (Business edition), or Google Cloud IAM permissions to create data stores and apps (Vertex AI).
- You have somewhere safe to store the Client secret, such as your company's password manager. The Client secret is shown only once.
Create an application
- Click your profile.
- Go to Account settings.
- Open Connected apps and select the Applications tab.
- Click Create application.
- Enter a name for the Application. Use a name that helps you identify the Application, such as Gemini Enterprise – Marketing team.
-
In Connect to, select the external tool, such as Gemini Enterprise.
- Click Save.
- Copy the Client ID and Client secret in the Your credentials and store them safely.
-
Click the eye icon to show the secret.
- Click I copied my credentials to close the window.
The Client secret is shown only once, immediately after you create the Application. It cannot be displayed again. If you lose it, rotate the secret to generate a new one.
Complete the set up in the external tool
Paste the Client ID and the Client secret into the external tool, along with the other values it asks for:
- server URL
- authorization URL
- token URL
- scopes
Use the in-app MCP guide for the exact values and steps for your tool.
- Click Analysis setup in the main menu.
- Select the Model Context Protocol (MCP) tab.
- Select the Gemini Enterprise tab, then Business Edition or Vertex Edition (GCP), and follow the steps.
Once the tool is set up, each user connects it once: they sign in to Contentsquare in a popup, select the account, and choose whether to grant access to the entire account or to specific projects.
The person who completes this sign-in determines the access available to the connection:
- If a Customer Admin completes the sign-in, the connection can have account-level access.
- If another user completes the sign-in, the connection is limited to that user's MCP access. The connection stops working if that user leaves the account or loses MCP access.
- For a tool shared by a team, have a Customer Admin complete the first sign-in.
Manage your applications
Applications are used by external tools that require a Client ID and Client secret.
Access your applications:
- Go to Account settings.
- Click Connected apps.
The Active connections tab shows the AI agents that your users have connected.
An account can have up to 100 Applications.
Rotate a client secret
A Client secret is valid for one year. Rotate it before it expires, if you have lost it, or if it may have been shared with someone who should no longer have access.
Rotating a secret keeps the same Client ID, permissions, and connections. Only the secret changes.
- In the Applications tab, click Rotate secret on the Application's row.
-
Review the confirmation, then click Rotate secret.
-
The Your new Client secret window opens. Copy the new secret. Like the first one, it's shown only once
- Click I copied my new secret.
- Paste the new secret into the external tool within the hour to avoid losing access.
The old secret stops working as soon as you rotate it. The external tool continues to use its existing access and stops at its next refresh, within one hour, unless you enter the new secret.
Users do not need to authorize the tool again after a secret rotation.
If the secret has already expired, the tool is disconnected. It reconnects once it has the new secret. Users who haven't used the tool in the last 30 days need to authorize it again.
Rename an application
Renaming only changes the name shown in Contentsquare. The Client ID and Client secret stay the same, and no changes are needed in the external tool.
- In the Applications tab, click Rename on the Application's row.
- Enter the new name.
-
Click Save.
Delete an application
Deleting an Application stops new connections immediately. Existing access stops within one hour.
- In the Applications tab, click Delete on the Application's row.
- Check the Application name and Client ID in the confirmation window.
- Click Delete.
Deletion cannot be undone. To reconnect the tool, create a new Application and configure the external tool with the new credentials.
How to add and manage user MCP access
By default, MCP setup grants Customer Admins full MCP integration access. Admins can also grant non-admin team members access to query Contentsquare data via their AI agents.
- Go to Account settings.
- Open Connected apps.
-
Select the User access tab. This tab lists everyone who currently has MCP access, including what they can do and who added them.
Connected apps has three tabs:
- User access: The users who can connect AI agents to Contentsquare through MCP.
- Active connections: The AI agents your users have connected. This tab used to be called Apps.
-
Applications: The applications your account created for tools that need a Client ID and Client secret.
Customer Admins always retain their own MCP access and can't remove it from themselves. This is why every Customer Admin appears in the list even if no one has explicitly granted them access.
-
Click Add user access.
- Select the permission level:
- Read: query and analyze existing Contentsquare data through MCP tools.
-
Write: Reserved for future MCP tools that can create or modify data (e.g. creating a segment or goal via an AI agent). These tools aren't available yet, so selecting Write, now has no effect, but you add it in advance, ready for when it's available.
- Select who you want to give access to.
Account access only grants to people who are users of your Contentsquare account (your own team members).

Which AI agents are compatible with the MCP server integration?
The MCP server works with any MCP-compatible AI agent, including:
- Claude Desktop
- ChatGPT (with MCP support)

- Gemini Enterprise
- Other AI tools that support the Model Context Protocol standard
Compatibility depends on your AI agent provider implementing MCP support. Check with your AI agent's documentation for MCP setup instructions.
Are we training any third-party models with MCP data?
No, we are not training any third-party models with data accessed through the MCP server. Please note we may review usage patterns and feedback to improve the quality of our services.
How do I revoke access for an AI agent connected to the MCP server?
Disconnect in your AI agent: remove the Contentsquare MCP server from your AI agent's settings. Access is automatically disabled after 30 days without use.
