What are dynamic variables?
Dynamic variables (DVARs) are additional pieces of information that provide context about user sessions. Unlike custom variables which must be sent with pageviews, dynamic variables can be sent at any time during a session, making them uniquely flexible for tracking evolving information or user actions.
Think of dynamic variables as session-level labels that help you:
- Track A/B test variations the user experienced
- Flag specific user behaviors like feature usage or errors
- Capture integration data from third-party tools
- Segment users based on session-level characteristics
Where can you use dynamic variables in Contentsquare
Segments
The primary use case for dynamic variables is creating powerful user segments based on session characteristics.
Examples include: AB test variants, NPS ratings, review ratings.
Session Replay
Filter session replays by dynamic variable values to watch sessions from specific test variations or user conditions.
How to implement dynamic variables (Web)
| Implementation method | Plan availability | Implementation Resources |
| The Contentsquare Tag Configurator (CSTC) | Requires Pro or Enterprise plans | CSTC template: Dynamic variables |
| Add via manual code | Requires Growth, Pro or Enterprise plans | Sending dynamic variables |
| Tag Manager | All plans | Dynamic variables Google Tag Manage template |
Note:
Implementation resources are available to help guide you on what you might need to do, to set up custom variables. It is up to you and your development team to implement this functionality as it best meets your requirements.
