This article applies to Free and Growth plan customers who have received a notification in their Data Masking settings inviting them to upgrade to the new interface.
Understand the change
The new Data Masking interface replaces the old preset-based system with a simpler model: a global masking mode (Full, Partial, or No masking) combined with page-level exception rules.
Most Contentsquare projects have been automatically migrated to the new unified Data Masking interface. However, some Free and Growth projects with specific masking configurations (using "Mask only text" or "Mask only digits" combined with additional URL rules) couldn't be migrated automatically, as they need manual verifications.
⚠ Admin users only can migrate their configuration!
Note that this upgrade is one-way. Once you save your settings in the new interface, you can't revert to the former setup. Take time to review your new configuration before saving.
How to upgrade
Step 1 - Open the upgrade prompt
- Go to App Settings > Tracking > Data Masking.
- A banner will be visible informing you of the upgrade, click “Switch now”
Step 2 - Define desired masking settings
- Select your desired ‘Global masking’ option: ‘Full masking’, ‘Partial masking’, or ‘No masking’.
- Create ‘Page-level exceptions’ rules to mask or unmask URLs, depending on your global masking setting.
- Make sure the Text, Numbers, and Media checkboxes under Page-level exceptions reflect what you want to mask or unmask on those pages.
- Use the ‘URL tester’ to validate each rule against the pages you want to target.
Step 3 - Save your settings
- Once you're happy with your configuration, click ‘Save’.
- Your project is now on the new Data Masking interface.
Saving is permanent. You won't be able to revert to the legacy setup after this point.
If you're not ready to upgrade yet
You can dismiss the upgrade prompt and continue using the legacy interface for now. A persistent notification banner will appear in your Data Masking settings as a reminder. You can dismiss the banner at any time, and upgrade whenever you're ready.
As the legacy interface will remain available for a limited time, we recommend upgrading as soon as possible to benefit from the new capabilities.
