This article walks you through creating, editing, and deleting Goals. You'll learn how to set up all three Goal types (View, Click, and Hover) and manage them once they're created.
Before you begin
- Make sure you understand what Goals are and how they can help you analyze your user's behavior.
- Mappings are how you organize your website pages in Contentsquare. They group similar pages together (like all product pages or all checkout pages). You'll choose a mapping when creating a Goal to specify which pages to track.
- For Click and Hover Goals, you'll need to set up a zone first, using Zoning Analysis. If you don't have a Zoning set up yet, you'll need to create one before you can complete these Goal types.
- Goals can only be created by Admin, Analyst and Expert user roles.
How to create a View Goal
‘View’ goals track when users land on a specific page. For example: Users who reach your checkout page or land on your pricing page.
-
Go to 'Analysis setup' in the main menu and select 'Goals'.
-
Click 'New goal' in the top right corner.
-
Give your Goal a name and add a description to help you remember what it tracks. For example: A goal for users who view/reach your 'Thank you' or 'Order Confirmation' page.
Tip
Click on the 'star' icon to save your goal as a favorite.
-
Select View as the user action.
-
Choose a mapping and a page group.
- Click 'Create'.
You will then see your created in Goal appear in the goals list.
Good to know
Goals are shared across all users within the same project and there is no limit to the number of goals per project.
How create a Click or Hover Goal
Click Goals track when users click on a specific element. Hover Goals track when users move their mouse over an element. Both require a Zone to be set up first

Go to 'Analysis setup' and select 'Goals'.
-
Click 'New goal'.
- Give your Goal a name and description.
-
Select Click or Hover as your navigation event.
-
Choose the mapping and page where the element appears.
-
Select the Zoning.
-
Search for and select the specific zone (the element) you want to track for this goal.
-
Click 'Create'.
Example: If you want to track clicks on a "Subscribe" button on your homepage, you'd select your relevant mapping, choose your homepage page, select your homepage Zoning, then select the "Subscribe" button zone.
Don't see a Zoning or zone to select? You will need to create one first:
-
Click 'Zoning Analysis' from the main menu.
-
Click 'New Zoning'.
-
Select the page and filters you need and click 'Continue'.
- Select the screenshot that matches your page.
-
Hover over and click on the element (zone) you want to track.
-
Right click on the zone and click 'Rename zone' if you need to rename it.
Quick ways to create Goals
You can create Goals on the fly via shortcuts in other Contentsquare capabilities including, Journey Analysis, Page Comparator or Zoning Analysis.
- Right-click to open the shortcuts menu.
-
Select 'Create a goal'.
Example of the 'Create goal' shortcut in Zoning Analysis.
- The Goal will autofill with the relevant criteria:
- The page, if you are creating a goal from the shortcut in Journey Analysis or Page Comparator
- The element (zone), you have right clicked on in Zoning Analysis.
- Click 'Create'.
