Tracking
settings.
Read-only for other users.
This guide explains how to verify that your Tag is properly installed and manage your data collection settings, whether you are setting it up for the first time or re-verifying after a migration.
Introduction
To access the Tracking settings:
- Click on your profile icon.
- Click 'Projects and users'.
- Select 'Tracking' from the left hand menu.
Data-collection status
Tag status
The Tracking menu always shows the current status of your tag:
- Not installed: Tag not found on the website. Complete your installation and then verify.
- Capturing data: Your tag is installed and collecting data. When you hovers over the data-collection status, it shows "Last checked: X hours ago"
- Not capturing data: Your tag is installed but it is not gathering any data. This may be due to an installation issue or because no traffic has been recorded on your website in the last 24 hours.
- Paused: Your tag is installed but is not collecting data.
Tracking URL changes
For single-page apps (SPAs) and websites, it is possible to configure the Tag to collect a new pageview whenever the URL changes. Make sure to enable this option in the Tracking configuration.
Pause or resume tracking
When the Tag is tracking data, you can pause or resume data collection, by clicking on the buttons ‘Pause’ or ‘Resume’.
Verify the Tag is correctly installed
After installing the Tag, you can verify the correct installation on your website and check the Data-collection status.
Verify Installation
- Click the ‘Verify installation’ button in the top right corner
- In the popup, enter a URL of your site where you’ve installed the Ta
- Click ‘Verify installation’ to launch the checkup
Once the check is complete, you'll see one of the following results:
✅ Tag installed successfully: your Tag is active and collecting data.
❌ Tag not found: your Tag was not detected. See the troubleshooting steps below.
Troubleshooting: Tag not found!
If verification fails, work through the following checks one by one:
- The tag is not in the head section of your page. Make sure the tag is pasted between the opening and closing head tags — not in the body. Check every page you want to track.
- A browser extension is blocking the tag. Disable all browser extensions (including ad blockers) and reload the page, then run the verification again.
- No traffic has been sent to the page yet. Load the page in your browser first, then return to Contentsquare and click Verify again.
- A Content Security Policy (CSP) is blocking the tag. Ask your developer to add the Contentsquare domain to your site's CSP allowlist.
- The tag contains the wrong Tag ID. Go to Settings > Tag Installation and check the Tag ID shown in the Tag identity section. Make sure this matches the ID in the snippet you installed. If they don't match, copy the snippet again and reinstall it.
If none of the above resolves the issue, you can also use the Contentsquare Tracking Setup Assistant browser extension to diagnose the problem. See below.
How to verify the Tag installation with the Contentsquare Tracking Setup Assistant
The Contentsquare Tracking setup assistant is a Chrome extension that helps you quickly check the configuration of the main tracking tag.
To download and use the extension please follow the steps on Contentsquare Tracking Setup Assistant.
FAQ for Contentsquare Tag verification issues
How come I'm seeing data from a different site?
It's possible that the wrong Tag has been added to your site. Compare the Tag ID, specifically the csq-number, that’s present on your website to the tag you’ve just copied. If the csq-number is different, then you can confirm that the wrong Tag has been added. Remove the Tag that is present on your site by retracing your installation steps, then add the correct Tag on your website.
Why has Contentsquare suddenly stopped collecting data?
The Tag was accidentally removed during an update to your site. Sometimes during website changes, the tag can be accidentally removed. If the verification fails, you may need to re-add the tag by following our installation guide.
