orderID - Unique transaction identifier
amount - Transaction total
currency - Transaction currency codeHow to implement the Shopify app on Contentsquare
Before you begin
You must be a Shopify administrator on your account.
Locate your Contentsquare ‘Tag ID’: in Contentsquare, go to the Integration Catalog, search for Shopify, and copy the Tag ID number.
For existing customers
If you previously installed Contentsquare using a custom web pixel, remove it before proceeding to avoid duplicate data collection.
Shopify App Installation and Setup Guide
Step 1: Install and configure the app
- Install the Contentsquare app from the Shopify App Store.
- In the app, go to the ‘Contentsquare data collection’ section and fill in the following:
- Tag ID: Paste the Tag ID (alphanumeric) from the Integration Catalog.
- Data privacy contact: Enter an email address for privacy requests (required for compliance).
- Click ‘Save’.
Step 2: Map your domains to Contentsquare projects
After saving your connection code, a domain mapping table appears. This table lists all the active domains on your Shopify store, detected automatically from your Shopify Markets configuration.
Each domain in the table shows one of two statuses:
| ✅ Assigned | A Tag ID has been entered. Checkout data will be collected for this domain. |
| ⚠️ Unassigned | No Tag ID entered. Checkout data will not be collected for this domain. |
To assign a Contentsquare project to each domain:
- Locate the domain in the table.
- In the 'Tag ID' field next to it, paste the Tag ID for the corresponding Contentsquare project.
- Repeat for each domain you want to track.
- Click 'Save'.
You can assign the same Tag ID to multiple domains if you want all of them tracked in the same Contentsquare project.
Reminder
- Only domains configured as active markets in Shopify appear in the domain mapping table. Inactive markets and redirect-only domains are not listed.
- The app checks that the Tag ID format is valid (alphanumeric), but does not verify it corresponds to an active Contentsquare project.
- For Existing customers: If you already have the Shopify App installed with a single project, your current Tag ID is automatically pre-populated in all domain rows. You can update individual rows at any time.
Step 3: Enable Contentsquare on your pages
Note1: Already using a Tag Management System (TMS)? Skip this step if Contentsquare is already deployed via GTM or hard-coded on your storefront. If GTM is also active on checkout pages, exclude those URLs from your GTM implementation to avoid duplicate data collection.
Note2: If you are using a Pre-Online Store 2.0 themes, you are not able to use this tag installation method on your checkout pages. Please follow these manual instructions instead.
- Click ‘Add Contentsquare to storefront’.
- In the Shopify theme editor, click ‘Save’.
- Make sure Data masking is enabled on checkout pages (see below).
- Click ‘Enable data collection on checkout’ to start capturing pageviews on checkout pages.
This also enables Session Replay, Heatmaps, and Zoning Analysis for Shopify Plus merchants.
Data privacy and masking on Checkout pages
Checkout pages have different masking capabilities compared to storefront pages due to Shopify's secure checkout environment.
The Contentsquare tag automatically protects personal data on checkout pages through automated masking.
To prevent the collection of personal data on checkout pages, ensure page masking is applied to your checkout URLs.

Important
Element masking does not work on Checkout pages when using the Shopify App.
If you have previously relied on Element Masking to protect sensitive data on other parts of your site, you cannot use the same approach on checkout pages.
