This guide is for Hotjar customers whose Contentsquare account and eligible projects were created automatically.
Many settings you manage in Hotjar are available in Contentsquare, but some work differently, are managed elsewhere, or are not currently available.
How settings are organised in Contentsquare
To find your settings, click the profile icon, then click Projects and users to access the menu for Tracking, Replays, Data masking, and IP blocking.
Note
Only Admins can edit settings for Tracking, Replays, Data masking and IP blocking.
In Hotjar, session targeting and tracking settings were managed together under Site Settings > Session Targeting & Tracking.
Contentsquare separates analytics and Session Replay settings:
- Project Settings > Tracking: applies to both analytics and Session Replay
- Project Settings > Replays: applies to Session Replay only
Settings applied automatically
Masking settings
Your existing Hotjar data suppression (known as data masking in Contentsquare) settings, including element masking (e.g., data-hj-suppress), digit anonymisation, and page-level masking rules, will apply automatically to your Contentsquare project. You do not need to recreate these masking settings.
Element masking
Your existing Hotjar element masking settings are applied automatically to your Contentsquare project.
Elements that were masked in Hotjar will remain masked in Contentsquare. You do not need to update your website or recreate these masking rules.
Page-level masking
Your Hotjar page-level masking settings are converted into equivalent Contentsquare masking rules.
This includes:
- Anonymise digits: the equivalent digit anonymisation setting is applied.
- Mask all content: a rule is created to mask text, numbers, and media across all pages.
- Mask text: a rule is created to mask text and numbers while leaving media unmasked.
- Mask specific pages: a Contentsquare rule is created for each page-specific Hotjar rule using the same URL pattern. Media is masked for these page-specific rules.
You do not need to recreate these settings manually.
Session targeting rules
Here is how your session targeting rules will carry over to your Contentsquare account:
- URL targeting rules will be migrated. You'll be able to view and edit them directly in the Contentsquare settings.
- Event-based targeting rules will not be migrated. Contentsquare doesn't support this yet, but we're actively working on it and plan to guide you through setup when it's ready.
Review your masking settings
You can review your settings under Project Settings > Data Masking.
