On the Growth plan, you can create up to 3 projects on your account. Each project tracks a separate domain or subdomain and has its own unique Contentsquare tag that must be installed on the relevant pages.
Project creation and management is only available to Admins.
What is a project?
A project is how Contentsquare tracks and analyses data for a specific website. Each project has its own tracking tag, session data, and settings - completely separate from your other projects.
Domains, subdomains, and paths - what's the difference?
Understanding this will help you decide how many projects you need and how to set them up correctly.
| Type | Example | Notes |
| Domain (root) | example.com | Your primary website address |
| Subdomain | shop.example.com | Always appears to the left of the root domain |
| Path | example.com/men/ | A page within your domain - not a subdomain |
Why it matters: Subdomains of the same root domain can share user sessions. Paths are always part of the same domain. Both affect how you should structure your projects - see Best practices below.
How to create a new project
-
Click your profile icon and go to your Account settings.
- Select Projects from the left navigation and click 'New project'.
3. Enter a project name and click 'Create project'.
4. You'll be taken to your new project's details page. Tracking and data collection will show as Not installed - click 'Install tag' to get started.

Best practices for multiple projects
Good use cases for separate projects
| Use case | Example |
| Two separate root domains | brand-a.com and brand-b.com |
| Truly independent subdomains | careers.example.com (no shared sessions with main site) |
| Staging vs. production | staging.example.com and example.com |
| Separate regional domains | example.co.uk and example.de |
When NOT to use separate projects
| Situation | Why to avoid |
| Root domain + subdomains with shared sessions | example.com → checkout.example.com: users moving between these mid-session will have their session broken, resulting in incomplete replays and missing funnel data |
| Path-based variants on the same domain | example.com/men/ and example.com/women/ are the same domain - use one project |
| Same domain in two projects | Causes data duplication and conflicts |
Each project has a unique tag.
It’s not recommended to reuse the same tag across different domains - all data will be attributed to a single project.
Managing your projects
Active and archived projects
Your projects page has two sections:
- Active projects: Currently collecting data. Full access to all features and tools included in your plan.
- Archived projects: Inactive and no longer collecting data. Historical data remains accessible until your retention period ends. After that, data is no longer accessible.
Project quota
Both active and archived projects count toward your 3-project limit. Only deleted projects are excluded from the count.
Deleting a project
If you have 2 or 3 projects:
- Click your profile icon and go to Account settings > Projects.
- Hover over the project you want to delete and click 'Manage'
- Scroll to the bottom of the page and click 'Delete project'.
-
Enter your email address to confirm and click 'Delete project'.
If you only have 1 project:
You must cancel your subscription before you can delete your project. Deleting your only project also deletes your main account, all data, and all users.
- Click your profile icon and go to Account settings > Projects.
- Hover over your project and click Manage.
-
Scroll to the bottom of the page and click Manage account.
- You will be directed to your account page.
- Scroll to the Delete [account name] section and click 'Delete account'.
Note
Deleting your account will delete all projects, their data, and all users. After a 7-day waiting period, your account will be permanently deleted and cannot be restored.
If you want to delete an archived project:
- Open the archived project from the Archived projects section.
- Click your avatar in the global navigation and select Project and users.
- Click 'Delete project' and follow the same steps as above to confirm the deletion.
What happens if you downgrade
If you downgrade from Growth to Free, you'll be reduced to 1 active project. Your most recently created projects are automatically archived - from newest to oldest.
Archived projects:
- Stop collecting new data immediately
- Remain accessible for historical data during your data access.
- Cannot be reactivated without upgrading your plan

Managing users across projects
With multiple projects on your account, you can control which users have access to which projects. User management works at two levels:
- Account level: View and manage all users on your account, their roles, and which projects they can access.
- Project level: Invite users and set their permissions within a specific project.
Admins have access to all projects on the account by default. Members can be added to specific projects only - useful when not all users need access to every project.
For full instructions, see How to invite and remove users.
FAQs
Can I use the same tag on multiple domains?
Yes, you can add multiple domains to a single project. However, for the most accurate data we recommend using a separate project per domain where possible. See Best practices for multiple projects for guidance on when to use separate projects vs. a single one.
Do archived projects count toward my limit?
Yes. Active and archived projects both count. Only deleted projects are excluded.
Who can access archived projects?
Account admins only.
I need more than 3 projects. What are my options?
Upgrade to the Pro plan. Click Compare plans from the project limit prompt, or go to Subscription in your account settings.
Can I give users access to only some of my projects?
Yes. Members can be added to specific projects only. To manage this, go to Account settings > Users, select the user, and update their project access from the Projects tab. Admins always have access to all projects on the account by default.
